Action Planning and Overcoming Barriers

Introduction

Action planning is one of the most crucial steps in counseling. This is the stage when the client starts to take control over their life, gain confidence for their future, and make the necessary changes to create a better life and well-being for themselves. A counselor must aid in the action planning process, allowing the client to be included in the decisions and helping them to succeed with their goals. Barriers must be recognized, and courses of action should be planned out for if there is a bump in the road in the process. It is best to utilize resources in the community for basic needs and long-term maintenance. Principles for Implementing an Action Plan When creating an action plan there are three steps. Step one is to develop the thought of a better future with the client (Egan, 2014, p. 337). Step two is to create goals with the client so that they can see their future in a brighter way (Egan, 2014, p. 338). The final stage is to find incentives to help the client commit to their plan (Egan, 2014, p. 338). Once the client sees how this will benefit them, they will be more likely to stick to the plan of action (Egan, 2014, p. 338). There are many parts to an action plan. The first part is a maintenance plan. This helps the clients have a daily reminder of the tasks they need to complete and the things they need to do to complete them (Grohol, 2016). The next part is to create a trigger list. The client needs to know what may cause them to stop their progress and make their symptoms emerge again and also should have a plan for how to decrease the triggers if they arise (Grohol, 2016). The client should have a crisis plan and or safety plan that is included in the action plan as well. This will allow them to have a resource for if they are in a crisis or dangerous situation (Grohol, 2016). On top

Weekly Participation

APA Format and Writing Quality

• Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. • Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation.
• I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.

Use of Direct Quotes

• I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly.
• As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content.
• It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.

• If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect.
• I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension.
• As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.

Communication

• Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me: 
  • Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class.
  • Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.
