Re: Module 3 DQ 1

As we have seen across our nation since 9/11, an act of terrorism can occur in any city, in any building or street, any school, any concert or sports venue in any state in our nation. I think it was our arrogance that no one would ever try to do something to our nation that led us to put our guard down. Now since 9/11, new divisions of counter-terrorism, Homeland Security, FBI, CIA, state, county and city officials have been on high alert. Special training has occurred at every level. This has become our way of life.

According to the reading material, the main mission of the FBI Counter-terrorism taskforce is to detect, deter, prevent, and swiftly respond to actions that threaten the U.S. national interests, at home or abroad. It is the objective to investigate threats of both domestic and international terrorism. Domestic terrorism occurs within the U.S. or one of its territories. International terrorism involves dangerous or violent acts against human life and is in an infringement of state, or U. S. laws. They are meant to intimidate or coerce a civilian population, or to influence the policy or conduct of a government entity (Thomas, P., 2002).

Assets we would need to have in place would be multifactorial, involving many divisions of city, state, county and federal agencies. Seeing how terrorism could occur in many different ways, we would not only need involvement of the FBI, and other intelligence agencies, but we would need taskforces in hazardous materials, both in bio-toxic materials such as anthrax, but also in chemical terrorism. Agencies that can be trained in this area would be Haz-Mat Units. Many city fire departments are now trained in this area. Other assets to have in place would be counter-terrorism tasks forces that investigate threats made in communities, no threat is too large or small. Hospitals really should have training on how to handle mass casualties from bioterrorism and chemical attacks. Weapons of mass destruction are a big threat in this country, as we have seen in the news over the past ten years. Military grade weapons designed for mass destruction are being sold to the general public either legally or illegally. Stricter laws on the sales of this type of weaponry would help to reduce the shootings. I believe our local, county and state police need to undergo extensive training in the area of terrorism as well. Boarder and the INS can be used to investigate persons of interest. We could also work with our international allies on detecting and deterring terroristic behavior abroad.

I live in Florida, and we are surrounded by water, with large sea-ports up and down the east and west coast of our state. These ports are crucial to the financial stability of our state due to goods being imported and exported. They also represent a large “hole” if you will of ways terrorists could invade our waterways, and literally large cities like Miami and Jacksonville with chemical or biological agents. It is a shame that we have to live on the look-out for terrorists, but it is the state of the world right now.

  • I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension.
  • As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.
