- Have you ever heard of “eugenics” before now? If so, were you aware of a eugenics movement, and did you know that there was ever an organized effort to try and eradicate people with disabilities in the history of the United States? If you hadn’t heard of this part of our history before, why do you think that is?
- Name and describe any two points that you felt were the most significant in our readings this week relating to the concept of ableism. Can you think of a situation, experience or even media portrayal that ties into this issue?
- Persons with disabilities are often the target of stigma and stereotypes. Briefly describe why this may be the case, and suggest a couple of ways that people might be helped by gaining and understanding of the issue through education.
- Social justice is often underscored and directed by having laws in place to safeguard the rights of citizens. This is also true in the case of persons with disabilities. After reviewing the readings, share with the class any two points which most struck you as being the most important for providing support to the disabled population(or to persons with a particular type of disability).

I have heard about eugenics from documentaries and discussions about WW2 and post-WW2 discussions. It seems to have been a huge movement in the 1900s for a while before calming down. Though if you look at history there are examples of it in many cultures an example is the Spartans. I think that the reason people have not heard about this is because it was not covered in school, so it is something you must learn about on your own.

Lowered expectations are a big one I think that you see that in movies where people are surprised when someone with a disability can do something. One example would be the story of Stephen Hawking people certainly lowered their expectations once his disability took over and became obvious. Another would be labeling because using certain terms for those with different conditions could also end up lowering expectations for those individuals. By labeling someone disabled or mentally challenged one can argue that you have put those people in a box.

The disabled often become stigmatized because they are different, so people do not understand them that well. They think differently and to me, humans are uncomfortable with anything out of the ordinary. They cover this stigmatization well in the Korean drama Extraordinary Attorney Woo, Woo, who herself has autism works with two clients in two different episodes that have autism. The show talking through Woo essentially shows how regular people question the autonomy of those with autism. She seems to realize that if those around her do not believe her because of her disability, then they will not listen to what she has to say. The show has the “genius autistic person” trope, but I thought it did a solid job of discussing the disability through these two court cases. Now as for what I think should be done I think that schools should teach their students about the differences in disabilities and how to interact with each type more naturally. Most people are incredibly awkward and bias around those with disabilities. Another option might be community events in each city that people can go and learn about disabilities. In the end I believe it to be all about education.

I think an important point that we should work towards is making sure that they feel included in society and are treated fairly. That is important for all in the world and is no different for those with disabilities. There should also be more effort to help them in countries where they are not treated well.
