Mitosis is a process by which cell division occurs, resulting in the formation of two identical daughter cells. Checkpoints in the phases of cell growth and division limit the potential for chromasomal genetic errors to be passed to daughter cells. When mutations occur during cell growth phases, there is a potential for checkpoints to be bypassed, allowing the genetic mutation to be passed on. Some of these mutations can cause cells to ignore their intended functions and grow rapidly, causing a tumor to form.
This does not occur during the process of meiosis because meiosis primarly occurs within germ cells. It is the process by which sperm and egg cells are formed and does not deal with growth or duplication of identical daughter cells. Errors in meiosis lead to genetic disorders such as Superman Syndrome.

Hypertrophy on the other hand, is the term for the proliferation of enlarged cells.
