Childhood obesity is a condition where excess body fat negatively affects a child’s health or well-being. As methods to determine body fat directly are difficult, the diagnosis of obesity is often based on BMI. Due to the rising prevalence of obesity in children and its many adverse health effects it is being recognized as a serious public health concern.[1] The term overweight rather than obese is often used when discussing childhood obesity, especially in open discussion, as it is less stigmatizing.[2]

Body mass index (BMI) is acceptable for determining obesity for children two years of age and older.[3] It is determined by the ratio of weight to height.[4]

The normal range for BMI in children vary with age and sex. While a BMI above the 85th percentile is defined as overweight, a BMI greater than or equal to the 95th percentile is defined as obesity by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It has published tables for determining this in children.[5]

The US Preventive Service Task Force reported that not all children with a high BMI need to lose weight though. High BMI can identify a possible weight problem, but does not differentiate between fat or lean tissue.[6] Additionally, BMI may mistakenly rule out some children who do have excess adipose tissue. It is therefore beneficial to supplement the reliability of a BMI diagnosis with additional screening tools such as adipose tissue or skin fold measurements

Celine’s parents are concerned about their daughter’s weight. Although neither of her parents is overweight, 9-year-old Celine, whom they adopted two years ago, weighs about 30 percent more than the average girl of her age and height. “We just can’t understand it,” they lament. “She’s tried several diets and still can’t lose weight! She’s so upset that all she does is mope around the house all day. What can we do to help our daughter?”

To advise Celine’s parents, you obviously need more information. Based on what you have learned about the biological, social, psychological and behavioral influence of children in this workshop’s assigned reading, generate five questions you might ask to help pinpoint the cause(s) of Celine’s weight problem. For each question, explain how the answer will help you determine the cause of Celine’s weight problem and what you might recommend as a result.

  • Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes.
  • Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own?

Late Policy

  • The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies.
  • Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances.
  • If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect.
  • I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension.
  • As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.

Communication

  • Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me: 
    • Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class.
    • Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.
