Unit 3 Discussion
Effective communication is an essential aspect in any profession and organization. effective communication entails conceiving and writing messages that are not offensive to the target audience, especially between employees and their managers. Sending emails and text messages to one’s boss is an efficient way of communicating any changes, concerns, questions and important information concerning certain issues, tasks and projects (Sibiya, 2018). Knowing how to craft a professional email is very critical in such situations.

Sending the above message can have significant impact on George and his interactions with the supervisor. The first impact is lack of professionalism where George is not acting in a professional manner based on the kind of composition of the message. The salutation of the message and the overall reaction by George demonstrate a lack of effective communication approaches. The second impact of sending this message is the reaction from the supervisor who may interpret it as lack of respect and ignorance of effective ways of communicating (Sowko et al., 2019). The implication is that communication will not occur in the situation because of poor conception and development of the message by George. The possible consequences for George include insubordination where he fails to respect the position of his supervisor and effective ways of communicating his displeasure for the changes on his shift that requires him to work over the weekend.
George could have done things differently by going through the message, understanding his audience, the intent of the message and the goal of effective communication. George should consider the different aspects of sending the message in an effective manner to his supervisor. He should go through the message and realize areas that need improvement. This means that he must ensure that he writes a professional email to his supervisor and not consider this as a form of communication.

The way George is emailing his boss is not very work appropriate at all. Nor would I really like if my friend was to text me like this. Some consequences for George would definitely be a write up. Another consequence for George could be also getting fired. Also with this email it seems like Frank wouldn’t change his mind about giving George off for work on the weekend just because he’s going away with his family. Also I feel like George has acted this way towards his boss or another coworkers so this may not be the best thing for him to have done.
There is a few things that George could have done to make the email with Frank more polite. He could have professional asked in the email about why he has work on the weekend. It could have been a mistake when someone made the schedule. If it was Frank who made the schedule maybe he thought he gave George off but instead he didn’t. He could have thought about hey maybe I should have called Frank and asked why I work on the weekend even though I’m going away with my family. Or maybe he should have thought about his weekend trip with his family more and put his vacation time in if he didn’t already do that.
The impact from the email George sent was shocking. It can easily be interpreted as George feeling outraged for being scheduled on a weekend he planned taking off. It is understandable that one would be upset about being scheduled for work when one has plans however there might be a solution for this situation. George demonstrates poor written communication and can be misconstrued for poor work ethic and professionalism as well which can impact the response he will receive from his supervisor Frank. One of the potential consequences for George would be a reprimand or an administrative warning related to professionalism and not being able to adapt to the demands of his position. Furthermore the way that George responded in the email can be a cause for a tense work environment when he returns which can cause some employees to feel uncomfortable especially coming from a person who appears to be demanding.
I believe if George would have given himself a minute to reply then the email would have been written differently. I feel that many people send responses in the moment rather than taking the time to gather ones thoughts and gather enough information. When it comes to employment one needs to consider that it is a team effort and George could have potentially proposed exchanging work hours or shifts with someone to have the weekend off as anticipated. George would have been better off waiting a few minutes to reply to send a constructive, professional and well thought out email where his supervisor Frank could have been understanding of his situation and grant the time off for the weekend.

In the world we live in today, a lot of our writing happens in the digital space—such as texting, e-mail, and social media. And, many times, it is easy to send or post something quickly without thinking it through first. The consequences can vary. The audience may be offended, or may even misinterpret the message. Going through a step by step process when we write can help us get our point across to our audience with the desired intent.
Consider the following example of an email sent by George to his supervisor (Frank) after finding out that he has to work the upcoming weekend that he planned to take off:
By sending the email, George risks alienating his boss and, not receiving the response he is hoping for. The email can come across as impolite and unprofessional to his boss, making him less likely to agree to George’s request for the weekend off. George can also come out as conceited or demanding, which could sour his relationship with his boss even more.
George could have drafted his email in a more formal tone, in a more courteous and considerate way. For instance, he could have begun the email with “Dear Frank” and closed it with “Sincerely, George”. Also could of spoken with greater deference, avoiding words like “Are you kidding me?” that might have come out as hostile. George may have politely requested the weekend off as opposed to pressing his boss for an answer.
The audience’s perception of the message might also be affected by the rhetorical and stylistic choices made. For instance, if the writing style is overly formal, the reader may see the author as being rude or condescending. The audience can also get the impression that the author is not taking the message seriously if the tone is too informal. Finding the ideal balance is crucial to making sure the information is delivered clearly. There are various ways in which rhetorical and stylistic decisions can affect how professionally written communication is received. One can convey professionalism and respect by using a more official tone, whereas friendliness and approachability can be conveyed by employing a more informal tone. Using language that is clear and succinct can also assist to ensure that the intended message is conveyed properly, whereas using language that is too technical or jargon-heavy may lead to misconceptions
