uPoor sanitation: Poor human waste management.
Water is essential for life, and it is found in every cell in our body. More than 50% 0f an infant’s body is made up of water, and they require more water than adults. Water for consumption should be non-toxic and disease-free. The two leading causes of water contamination are pathogens and chemicals (Currie et al., 2013). Pathogens are the disease-causing organisms that are found in unclean water and often result in life-threatening diseases in infants. Pathogens cause adverse and massive human health problems compared to other types of water contamination. Pathogens enter the water sources mostly through untreated human and animal waste. Chemical contamination is a result of the pollution of water sources and leaked pipes. Common chemical contaminants include selenium arsenic and fluoride, which pose serious human health risks when consumed in high quantities (Currie et al., 2013).
Sanitation is the prevention of human contact with wastes, for hygienic purposes. It is also the act of promoting health by preventing human contacting with hazards that are associated with a lack of clean water, healthy food, control of living organisms that transmit diseases and a clean environment (Ngure
et al., 2014). Basic sanitation refers to accessibility to a toilet or latrine. Poor sanitation practices in our households create a dangerous environment with adverse health risks to children. Besides, inadequate sanitation facilities contribute to the transmission of diseases. How we change and dispose of infants’ diapers determines our sanitation practices.
People living in rural areas and crowded urban centers encounter water shortage and lack or poor sanitation systems, with increased pollution of water sources by human activities such as bathing, urinating, defecating, and washing clothes, and animal watering (Ngure et al., 2014). As a result, infants living in these settings are likely to consume contaminated water and live in households with poor sanitation.

Identify at least one support service within your community for preterm infants and their family. Provide the link for your colleagues to view. Does the service adequately address needs of this population? Explain your answer.
