There is no future without the past. History is a great phenomenon that influences society and determines one’s future. We are all connected to the roots of history but never truly realize this. American history is tremendous: from Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address to Barack Obama’s election that obtained a significant impact on present and upcoming generations. However, not all events can affect the country positively.

For centuries Americans struggled with plenty of issues such as slavery, the Great Depression, World War II, Cold War and finally, the War on Terrorism. Ii would seem to be a powerful, prospering country, when sudden acts of terrorism, better known as 9/11, took place in 2001. This event dashed all hopes and expectation to live without conflicts and posed a question of safety not only for Americans, but for all nations in the world. Hundreds of innocent people were killed, buildings destroyed and leaders mentally devastated. Looking on 20 years back, the question arises: “How is this tragic event still affecting people and can be relevant years later?”

The events of terrific hijacking gave birth to a new era of collective trauma and anxiety. Together with terrorism, other examples of violence came into American families and changed ones’ life drastically. In the weeks and months following the 9/11 attacks, media-based exposure was associated with psychological distress. ( Dana Rose Garfin). Consequently, the risk of heart diseases increased among young people. It is acknowledged that children were affected as well by suffering from xenophobia, fears of other peers, stress and anxiety. Apart from mental implications, terrorism affected country’s economy and left plenty of unemployed workers behind. This caused poverty and social exclusion. But the most important effect was a total destruction of American convictions about safety and invincibility. People understood that the end of the Cold War did not mean an end to foreign violent threats. Nevertheless, Americans turned out to be resilient enough to overcome the consequences of a horrible tragedy, recover ones’ economy and ensured civilians’ safety and freedom.

After Barack Obama’s coming to the leadership, people were ready for new changes. Obama’s campaign motivated youth to use social networks and media that gained one’s success soon after. A wide usage of mobile phones, implemented technological innovation had a massive impact on people and remain relevant issue till now. Every student is using smartphone now and consequently, have access to every source of information. The release of the first I-phone in the world came during Obama’s reign and till now is gaining more and more success among people. The Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare, received a good feedback and provided a good health care for civilians. Health insurance is now mandatory for all citizens, part of a grand bargain that prohibits insurance companies from denying coverage on the basis of pre-existing conditions and that subsidizes premiums for those who cannot afford them (Robert David Sullivan). Basically, president’s good regiment led Americans to a better life and remains relevant till nowadays.

In conclusion, the great history of ones’ own country is obligatory to know. The impact of American history is huge and it affects people every day. Independence war, Great Depression, 9/11, violent attacks, and technology revolution make civilians resilient and stronger, enduring, and invincible. It is essential to learn and love one’s history and remember there can be no future without history.

When it comes to the word Terrorism, many can think of a specific attack that has occurred and know exactly where they were and what they were doing at that exact time. 9/11/2001 will always be a day I will remember, sitting in English class, watching the morning news as we did every morning to start class, and a newsbreak came through, a plane had crashed into the Twin Towers and from that moment, it would be a part of history  and our country would never be the same. No matter who you are or what you do, everyone has been affected at some point in there lives by Terrorism. In the world today, we have been experiencing Global Terrorism at a high rate, placing everyone on high alert. Terrorism can be described as a calculated use of unlawful violence or threat of unlawful violence to instill fear; intended to coerce or to intimidate governments or societies in the pursuit of goals that are generally political, religious, or ideological as defined by DOD (2020). When you include the word Global to terrorism, it is considered an international involvement of terrorism not only to once specific region but has a global effect. With the effects from the terrorist attacks from the past and its lingering effects on society, along with the current threats of terrorism of today, I do not feel like there will be an end to Global Terrorism. I feel that even though we can succeed in taking down the most powerful terrorist leader, there will always be another one in the making, building their terror cells up and recruiting members into their groups. There will always be a group that is filled with hatred, evil and revenge directed towards a specific target such as a religion, government or have an ideological drive to fuel their attacks.  As discussed by USDS (2006), not only does the U.S use the force of the Military, but it also employs the force of power to fight against terrorism with diplomatic, financial, intelligence and law enforcement activities to help protect our country and others. As noted, there are other alternatives to fight terrorism, but it can be examined that it takes more than just one strategy to fight terrorism. With the use of key pieces as discussed, the fight on terrorism is a collaborations of the use of military, diplomacy, financial, intelligence and law enforcement, showing that it needs more than just one key element to fight and protect against terrorism. Military involvement thought out the years have played an important role with fighting off terrorism, as discussed in Corbett et al. (2014), back in 2014 President Obama made and announcement that the U.S combat operations in Afghanistan for the most part was over, most U.S. troops except for 9,800 soldiers had left the country. But by removing the physical protection of the military, it leads to leaks of the uprising of discrete small terror cells to start producing and multiplying with members, keeping the control of terrorist actions less maintainable. So it can be said that, yes if we were to back out of the Middle East, the U.S could face other challenges elsewhere, but at what cost? Brands (2019) discusses that when Obama’s administration sought to limit engagement in this region as a way to avoid blowback or moving on to other promising areas, we weren’t able to fully get out due to the persistent threat of terrorism keeping us engaged in Afghanistan; for example the humanitarian concerns keeping military action in Libya, causing U.S. withdraw from Iraq and less interaction within Syria caused a regional meltdown causing the military to intervene with a new and terrifying threat from ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq & Syria), a terrorist group originating in Iraq. This is one example that can be taken and shown as proof that the military is still very much needed in combating the War on Terror for the foreseeable future.
