Standards of care is defined as the care any prudent nurse would render when caring for a similar patient in the same or similar circumstances (American Nurses Association, 2007). Standards of care are simple guidelines for how quality care should be given among different professionals. When a healthcare institution places a guideline into effect for standards of care, they are expected to be followed.

Standards of care change for many different circumstances. For example, if a certain standard is failed, provisions are made to keep it from happening again. If a patient keeps falling with the current standards of care, a new protocol should be initiated to decrease the number of falls. Standards of care also change from nurse to nurse. There is a proper way to perform a specific task and the nurse fails to follow it. This is especially true for those “seasoned” nurses who are used to doing things a certain way. When the standard changes they continue to perform tasks as they always have.

Standards of care change depending on an emergency situation. Problems can arise that cause professionals to alter how care is rendered. In a mass casualty incident this is often what occurs. Due to the extent of the emergency, protocols must be changed in order for providers to still give adequate care. Under normal circumstances, patients are cared for as they present. However, during an MCI focus is placed on individuals who are expected to survive. This is not the standard, but the task is to save as many people as you can. Providers perform tasks in such a way that helps save victims to the best of their abilities.

Lastly, standards of care may change with advances in technology and evidence based procedures. With an advance in technology, professionals are expected to change in hopes of rendering better care. If a better process is instituted, the way in which care is given should also change. It doesn’t make sense to have better resources and still have the same standard in place. Evidence based procedures are ever-changing in nursing care. If the evidence provides a better outcome for care, the standard is altered to ensure better care is given. Standards of care may change from time to time, however as long as the patient is properly care for that’s what matters.
