NHS-FPX 4000 Assessment 1 Applying Ethical Principles
NHS-FPX 4000 Assessment 1 Applying Ethical Principles
Applying Ethical Principles
Ethics in the nursing profession is a core principle that governs the conduct of all healthcare workers. The ethical framework is in place to allow nurses and other healthcare professionals to conduct healthcare services within the legal jurisdiction. Many court cases involving nurses’ violation of ethical principles imply that nurses are ignorant of the principles or decide to deliberately violate the guidelines (Grönlund & Brännström, 2022). These ethical principles are important in allowing nurses to decide on complex ethical issues and deliver the desired healthcare expectation. Therefore, the purpose of this write-up is to address the ethical issues involving Dr. Kerr, Jenna, and Chris Smith on the vaccination issue.
Overview of the Case Study
Ana’s parents, Jenna and Chris Smith, have been blessed to have Ana as their first child from the community hospital. The hospital professional confirmed that Ana had no complications at birth and commented that Ana was normal from birth. The parents are happy with their child and vowed to ensure all the safety measures are in place for Ana. They thought their child was safe by adopting a natural method in terms of natural meals and breastfeeding. The parents refuse vaccination at 5-day old, citing that it would expose the child to the risk of autism.

The Smiths are learned people who have done background research on child vaccination and complied their findings that vaccines increase risks to newborns. Thus, they believe that the vaccine would cause potential harm to their child. As such, they would not risk the life of their only child while they have understood and confirmed the negative effects of the vaccines on their child. While citing the increased risk of autism as the main vaccination risk, they anticipate that other additional issues might befall their child.
After listening to and understanding the opinions and perceptions of the Smiths, Dr. Kerr believes that the parents are not being fair to their child by making such erroneous decisions. Dr. Kerr explains the whole scenario and issues related to vaccination to change the thinking of these parents think. She explains and clears the air on the controversies that had been said on the vaccines. However, in her explanation, she explains to the family how the vaccines have saved millions of children over the past years. She explained that the current decrease in the infection rate caused by Haemophilus influenza type B is a result of immunization done against the bacteria.

While explaining more about the vaccines and their importance to the child, the doctor iterated that the US government monitors the safety of vaccines more often and is open to studying any abnormal change that the vaccine would have on an individual. Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) updates information on vaccine data to ensure its effectiveness. Besides, the FDA and CDC also have a role in the safety of these vaccines by providing a national surveillance program to the public. The systems depend on increased transparency and encourage the community to report any adverse vaccine reaction to the provided links. These measures ensure that one does not have all the vaccine data, and all adverse reactions are studied to ascertain the main problem. The doctor also added that refusing vaccination on the child would risk the lives of other children in the general community who cannot be vaccinated based on genetic conditions or cancer treatments.
Despite the extensive and professional approach given to the parents, they still declined to vaccinate Ana. This decision limits Dr. Kerr’s option to save Ana and other unvaccinated children in the general population. This is the ethical dilemma issue facing Dr. Kerr.
Analysis of Ethical Issues in the Case Study
Jenna and Chris are the main players in this ethical issue because their child is still under their custody and does not have the sense that they could decide on this case. The choice of the parents would define the direction that the case would take because the doctor does not have the power to change their wish (Ilkafah et al., 2021). The explanation of studies done on the safety of the vaccines was meant to expand the couple’s understanding and allow them to change their mind about vaccinating their child.
Dr. Kerr respects the parents’ decision but feels that they are making a bad decision for the innocent child. The parents are selfish to both Ana and the millions of unvaccinated children within the community because they thrive on the safety of other children (Grönlund & Brännström, 2022). She projects that not vaccinating Ana would increase vaccine preventable-illness (VPIs) rates that would reduce the safety of children. However, these explanations do not convince the parents to vaccinate Ana.
Using the Ethical Decision-Making Model to Analyze the Case Study
Three main decision-making models affect the case study. For instance, moral awareness comes in when the doctor explains facts related to childhood vaccination. The moral judgment component comes after understanding issues related to the vaccines and accepting a good choice based on the relayed information (Grönlund & Brännström, 2022). The ethical behavior would address the healthcare professional’s actions concerning the provided dilemma. These components are evident in the approach that Dr. Kerr gives this case. Thus, she still believes that vaccinating Ana is correct, and the parents need to change their opinions on this issue.
Effectiveness of Communication Approaches in the Case Study
The communication skills applied in this case are aligned to allow the parents of Ana to understand that they had limited information on the vaccination concept. Dr. Kerr allows the parents to table their reasons for not accepting the vaccination, then decides to explain the vaccination concept comprehensively (Ilkafah et al., 2021). Dr. Kerr knows that vaccinating Ana is right, but she needs the parents’ consent to vaccinate the child. She is keen not to vaccinate Ana without the perception of her parents as this would trigger more ethical issues.
The communication platform developed between Ana’s parents and Dr. Kerr focuses on the benefits of vaccination that would allow the parents to change their opinion and vaccinate the child. Her respect for the patients limits her option of making the best healthcare decision to save Ana in the future (Ilkafah et al., 2021). The doctor communicates the issue effectively to understand the risk of not vaccinating Ana.
Resolving the Ethical Dilemma by Applying Ethical Principles
Two ethical principles apply in this case study. First, the doctor must respect the patient’s autonomy by adhering to the parents’ decision. The background information that the parents have on vaccination should be preserved and allow their choice to take the lead at the end of the day (Damsma et al., 2021). Dr. Kerr is also advocating for health of Ana by explaining the benefits of vaccines to the parents. The patient, in this case, is Ana, and all the choices made by the doctor should work best to protect the child’s health. In this case, Dr. Kerr would have to adhere to the parents’ autonomy and offer professional advice that defines the correct intervention that would save Ana.
Dr. Kerr could as well seek the intervention of a third party to solve the case. Approaching government agencies on the issue could heighten options and add other professionals to aid the family in understanding the need to vaccine Ana (Ilkafah et al., 2021). Dr. Kerr is obligated to save Ana despite the autonomy of the parents. Therefore, seeking a third party, in this case, would work for the best of the child.
Conclusion
Ethical dilemmas form part of the professional healthcare practice. They need an adequate understanding of the ethical principles to solve these dilemmas. Dr. Kerr has faced an ethical issue requiring her professional skills in applying ethical principles to solve the case. Her actions are aligned with protecting her well-being of Ana, triggering autonomy and beneficence principles.
