Nurses are patient advocates and first responders and interactors with patients and their families when they get to health care settings. Imperatively, communication is a critical component of sound relationships, collaborations, and cooperation, which are essential aspects of professional practice for nurses. The quality of communication when interacting with patients has a considerable influence on patient outcomes. For instance, studies show that enhancing nursing communication can reduce medical errors and make a difference in positive outcomes (Brownie, Scott & Rossiter, 2016). As such, nurses should leverage on therapeutic communication with their patients for better and positive care outcomes.
As posited by Brianna, nurses need to interact with their patients by consciously influencing them and helping them better understand their conditions through verbal and nonverbal communication. Therapeutic communication implores nurses to encourage patients to express their ideas and feelings essential in realizing mutual acceptance and respect, and trust (Brownie et al., 2016). I believe that nurses should deploy different therapeutic communication techniques to build trust and better interactions with patients in all health care settings. These techniques include listening actively, acceptance, and giving recognition to patients, among other approaches. In their study, Fite and colleagues (2019) assert that therapeutic communication entails purposeful interactions between a health care professional and patients, which helps attain positive health outcomes.
