NR 501 Week 5 Reflection On Learning

This week has contributed immensely to my personal and professional growth. I developed an understanding of the impact of systems theory and complexity science on the role of nurse practitioners. Systems theory and complexity science enables nurse practitioners to understand the interrelationship that exist between and among variables that influence care. The understanding enables them to develop effective care plans that address the variables that affect the health and wellbeing of their patients negatively. Nurse practitioners currently work in environments characterized by highly complex, emerging healthcare problems affecting their populations. Effective management of these conditions require nurse practitioners to adopt care interventions that are dynamic in responding to the ever-changing patient needs (Braithwaite et al., 2018; Pype et al., 2018). In this case, systems theory and complexity science helps nurses to see the whole picture of the different care needs of patients, interaction of variables, and responsive interventions to promote optimum health outcomes for them.

The week’s activities also exposed me to the different nurse practitioner practice models in healthcare. A reflection of my practice site shows it to adopt the collaborative practice model. The collaborative practice model utilizes healthcare teams, with the nurse practitioners being part of the collaboration team. The nurse practitioner works with other healthcare providers such as physicians and nurses to develop care plans. I am satisfied with the model since it promotes accountability, teamwork, and responsibility among the staff involved in the patient care process (Wei et al., 2020). I believe that the drivers for practice models for advanced practice nursing in my state include the evolving role of nurse practitioners, increasing recognition of nurse practitioner influence on care outcomes, and emerging patient needs that demand responsive care models. The changes in healthcare landscape due to factors such as healthcare policies and technological advancements also increase the need for transformative healthcare models in nursing.

Week 5 Reflection on Learning

Write 1-2 paragraphs reflecting on?caring and culture in the NP role. Then save the reflection as a Word Document for submission later in the course. In week 8, you will submit all reflections as a single document.

This reflection is worth 5 points and the final reflection document in week 8 is worth 15 points.

You will need to post your reflection here before you are able to see other students’ posts.

Provide one specific example of how you achieved the weekly objectives. What personal values, if any, were challenged this week?

What values can you reaffirm or want to reconsider after this learning?

Week 5: Borrowed (non-nursing) Theories Applied to the Nursing Profession

While the focus of this course is nursing theory, frequently the use of non-nursing or borrowed theories occurs.  Select a nursing practice area (i.e. education, executive, advance clinical practice, informatics, and health care policy); then identify a non-nursing (borrowed) theory; and apply it to the area you have selected.  Be sure to provide an example of how the non-nursing theory can be used to enhance the selected practice area.  Don’t forget to include scholarly reference(s) to support your information.

  • For this post, I am going to choose the specialty track that I am currently in: the educator track. A non-nursing (borrowed) theory I think that applies to my specific area is the discipline-specific theory. This theory is defined as an organized knowledge that is unique to its own specific discipline. Knowledge that is considered owned can have significance to the knowledge and discipline that is shared throughout our profession. This makes me think of things such as providing answers to questions, solutions to problems, or explaining nursing content. This theory is designed to identify the knowledge that is specific to a certain branch of learning, which in this field would be nursing. Its purpose is to provide a database that is related to nursing care and is designed to improve and promote the health and well-beings of the patients under my nursing students care (Cordon, 2013).

We as nurses must have a discipline-specific determination to provide high quality nursing care. We must establish a framework specifically designed to the nursing profession. We are legally and morally responsible for our patients, but for some reason, the meaning of “high quality care” remains unclear mainly because the models we have used to define are borrowed from other disciplines. Patient outcomes are products of our service. They are specific to our patient’s own perspective and are actions and behaviors are linked to our discipline-specific determination and knowledge (Gunther et al., 2012).

Week 5 Assignment: Application of Theory

Guidelines with Scoring Rubric

Purpose

Within the profession of nursing, multiple theories, models, and conceptual frameworks have been created to serve as a foundation for practice. The purpose of this assignment is to appraise the value of the model in serving as a theoretical framework and apply the model to your selected area of future professional nursing practice (your MSN track). For this assignment, you will select one of the following nursing models to address within the paper: the Patient-Centred Nursing (PCN) Framework or the Chamberlain Care Model.

Course Outcomes

Through this assessment, the student will meet the following Course Outcomes:

  • Apply nursing theory as a framework to guide the translation of knowledge and implementation of evidence-based practice in future professional settings. (CO #2)
  • Analyze theories from nursing and relevant fields with respect to the components, relationships among the components, and application to advanced nursing practice. (CO#4)

Total Points Possible

This assessment is worth 175 points.

Due Date

Submit your file(s) by 11:59 p.m. MT Sunday at the end of Week 5.
