As stated, CDSSs may some disruptions in patient care workflows, they were initially intended to improve the delivery of healthcare by facilitating the enhancement of clinical decisions that are targeted within clinical knowledge, patient information, and other health information as they were created to directly aid in clinical decision-making that is geared towards clinicians’ knowledge-based and patient-specific assessments or recommendations for implementations (Sutton et al., 2020). As CDSS alerts nurses to access real-time patient data, this helps to facilitate and enhance patient safety, medication accuracy, and pertinent specific patient-centered clinical decision-making plan of care, which is a critical benefit to advance practice nurses to direct, diagnose, and implement a specific patient-centered plan of care, holistic nursing, and collaboration of interdisciplinarity as needed.

I don’t think there is a right wrong answer in relation to CDSS being beneficial versus impairment of care. I think the individual that is using this system has to make conscious decision in the type of care we want to give. In doing so, we look at benefits and figure out ways to incorporate those things. The cons can be examined to figure out a plan to combat them to improve patient care. It will take time and effort of course, but the idea is to to be able to combine CDSS with face to face interaction for the purpose of patient safety and care. The will help with providing that holistic approach that talk about often. Once experimental knowledge is developed, we will be able to figure out to make the system for us (Sutton et al., 2020).

This week we learned about the potential benefits and drawbacks to clinical decision support systems (CDSSs). Create a “Pros” versus “Cons” table with a column for “Pro” and a separate column for “Con”. Include at least 3 items for each column. Next to each item, provide a brief rationale as to why you included it on the respective list.

The primary goal of a CDSS is to leverage data and the scientific evidence to help guide appropriate decision making. CDSSs directly assist the clinician in making decisions about specific patients. For this discussion thread post, you are to assume your future role as an APN and create a clinical patient and scenario to illustrate an exemplary depiction of how a CDSS might influence your decision. This post is an opportunity for you to be innovative, so have fun!
