Influence of IOM on Education, Leadership, Benefits, and Opportunities for BSN-Prepared Nurses

With the aging American population, the healthcare system is likely to face a high shortage of qualified nurses in the future. Consequently, the need to hire more nurses has been acknowledged over the years. However, this has not been able to take place due to the few numbers of professional nursing instructors. As such, the IOM reports the advancement of the education system, which will increase the number of bachelors of science in nursing (BSN) graduates. BSN graduates are more responsible, with better supervisory roles, hence making good leaders revolutionize the healthcare system. (Whitehead, Dittman, & McNulty, 2017) They will even enjoy several benefits such as more job opportunities and higher salaries. Lastly, BSN will also create room for achieving a higher level of education and professionalism at masters and doctoral levels, which are required for nurses to serve as primary healthcare providers, researchers, and nurse faculty.

Importance of the Evolution of the Education and Role of the Nurse to Meet the Needs of an Aging and Diverse Population

Advanced aging and the diverse American population necessitate a high level of patient care expertise. The majority of elderly patients have chronic illnesses that necessitate high-quality skills and knowledge for better care outcomes. As a result, the diverse population necessitates nurses with adequate knowledge and skills, such as improved communication and an understanding of various cultural norms and beliefs. As a result, registered nurses and nursing assistants lack the necessary qualifications to provide better care to this population (Kearney, 2019). As a result, better education is required to increase the number of BSNs with the necessary competencies and qualifications to care for this vulnerable population. Further education also makes room for specialist nurses, who are required to care for patients with critical illnesses.

Significance of Professional Development, Lifelong Learning, in Relation to Diverse Populations Across the Life Span and Health-Illness Continuum

The nursing profession is very challenging due to the continuous changes in information and ways of providing care. To keep up with the changes, there is a need to adopt a lifelong learning attitude for better professional development and improve the quality of care provided. Consequently, nurses encounter patients from different cultural backgrounds, different age groups, and diverse illnesses (Whitehead, Dittman, & McNulty, 2017). As such it becomes very hard to take care of such patients while relying primarily on the education that was gained before in graduate school. However, lifelong learning will help in keeping up with the3 current information and technology required in taking care of this diverse population.

Effectiveness of Nurses Managing Patient Care Within an Evolving Health Care System

In the current healthcare system, nurses play a new role in care coordination from numerous providers, managing caseloads of individuals with intense healthcare needs, and helping patients transition to other healthcare settings or into their homes. Additionally, the evolving healthcare system has allowed nurses to work as “health coaches” with effective results both in illness prevention and health promotion (Famure et al., 2020). Lastly, new paths have been established for nurses in emerging fields such as informatics, telehealth, scientists, leaders, and genetics and genomics, which have improved the quality and efficiency of healthcare provision.

The Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) report named The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health was published in 2010 and focuses on analysis of the nursing workforce. It was established in an attempt to improve the American healthcare system (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2016). The report is a comprehensive analysis of hospital staff, particularly nurses. This IOM report of 2010 was intended to support the foundation of conditions for modification in the nursing profession. This paper provides an in-depth analysis of the IOM report of 2010, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, and its influence in nursing care

The Four Messages Outlined In the IOM Report

These key messages include:

  • Nurses should be encouraged to practice to their full extent of education and training.
  • Nurses should be exposed to higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that enhances continuous academic progression.
  • Nurses should have a positive collaborative environment with physicians and other medical professionals to help transform the American healthcare system.
  • Better data collection and improved information infrastructure is needed to ensure effective workforce planning and policymaking.

Considering the vital roles of nurses with respect to the accessibility, value, and quality of care, the nursing profession must undergo a fundamental transformation (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2016). These key messages are important to nursing practice because they inform what nurses are required of nurses to improve the quality of care, planning and policy-making and data collection.

Influence the IOM Report on Nursing Education and Nursing Leadership

Nursing Education

The IOM report advocates for nurses to achieve higher levels of education and training. It also requires that the nursing education system be improved to promote seamless academic progression. The IOM

report suggested that at least 80 percent of the nursing professionals should have a BSN degree by 2020. These recommendations have impacted nursing education positively. Although 80 % has not been achieved, more than 50% of the nursing professionals are now BSN holders (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2016).

Nursing Leadership

The IOM report aims at strengthening nursing leadership which is highly required to transform the US healthcare system. Nurses are required to have the adaptive capacity to take new roles in new settings and educating themselves along the way (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2016). The report reminds nurses to gain an understanding of the system’s dynamics to make them more effective in their individual jobs to improve outcomes. Nurses are called to develop a collaborative culture and skills to improve care and health policy. NRS 430 Assignment Professional Development of Nursing Professionals GCU

Benefits and Opportunities for BSN-Prepared Nurses

The IOM report aimed at increasing the BSN holders to about 80% by 2020. BSN-prepared nurses are associated with better patient outcomes. The nurses have a rich understanding of how economics, culture, and politics are important to healthcare (Perfetto, 2019). Hospitals are currently seeking nurses with a high level of education. BSN-prepared nurses have a high level of job security and high string salaries. These are just some of the opportunities and benefits for BSN-prepared nurses.

Importance of Evolving Nurse’s Role and Education to Meet the Needs of an Aging and Increasingly Diverse Population

The American population is growing older as well as diverse making it even more necessary to transform nursing care to meet the needs of the people. Evolving the nurse roles and education to meet the needs of aging and diverse population is important for one reason or the other. As people grow older, their healthcare needs become even more complex with the likelihood of developing one or more chronic diseases (Llorente & Valverde, 2019). The aging population is in great danger if nurse roles and education if not transformed to meet their needs. Similarly, a diverse population have varied beliefs and principles that may hinder nursing care. Educating nurses to be culturally competent will help them navigate challenges associated with diverse cultural backgrounds.

Importance of Professional Development

Professional development is important to nursing care because it helps medical staff keep up-to-date their training to deliver the best care to patients. Best practices and patient care standards are constantly evolving, therefore, professional development provide new information through training and education (Kiss, Simpson, & Smith, 2020). Similarly, population diversity continues to grow across the lifespan with changing needs and competency skills. Professional development educate nurses regarding diverse population across the lifespan and new competency skills to ensure they approach the upcoming associated challenges effectively.

How Nurses Can Assist In Effectively Managing Patient Care within an Evolving Health Care System

Nurses have a significant role to help meet the evolving needs of the healthcare system. They are responsible for achieving patient-centered care, strengthening primary care services, and providing well-coordinated care (Salmond & Echevarria, 2017). They also help in managing caseloads of patients with intense care needs. Nurses educate patients and families regarding emerging diseases and new medical prevention measures. Furthermore, nurses have contributed to the growth of emerging fields such as informatics, telehealth, genomics and genetics to meet current patient needs (Salmond & Echevarria, 2017). Nurses are also serving as full and essential partners on interdisciplinary health care teams.

Conclusions

The IOM report focuses on the analysis of the nursing healthcare workforce. The four key messages provided in the report are important to nursing practice because they inform what nurses are required of nurses to improve the quality of care, planning and policy-making and data collection. Nurses are actively involved in managing patients care in an evolving healthcare system. Nurses are contributing to the growth of emerging fields such as informatics, telehealth, and others.

Outline the process for the development of nursing standards of practice for your state, including discussion of the entities involved in developing the standards of practice and how the standards of practice influence the nursing process for your areas of specialty.

Re: Topic 4 DQ 1

Standard of practices for RNs in Wisconsin is developed by the Board of nursing to specify of the minimum practice standards for which Registered Nurses are responsible for and to clarify the scope of practice for RNs (Board of Nursing, 2018). It outlines 3 standards of practice.

1). General nursing procedures, which states nurses should utilize the nursing process of assessment, planning, interventions and evaluation when providing nursing care, and decease prevention 2). Performance of delegated acts, describes delegate task one can perform based on education, written protocols or orders, and consult provider when a delegated task is known to cause harm to a patient 3). Supervision and direction of delegated acts, states to provide assistance and support when delegating a task as well as observe, monitor and evaluate the performed delegated task under supervision (Board of Nursing, 2018).

The American Nurses Association is an entity involved in contributing to the development of the standard of practice, it has responsibility for coming up with scopes and standards of practice and enforcing these practices for all professional nurses (Nursing Scope of Practice: American Nurses Association). The Emergency Nurses Association is an association that’s speciality is emergency medicine and examines issues relevant to emergency care, publishes professional guidelines, and issues a peer-reviewed journal based on established protocols in the nursing practice (About Emergency Nurses Association, 2020).

RESPOND

Bonnie, you have done an outstanding work by detailing the process for the development of nursing standards of practice in Wisconsin and mentioning entities involved in developing standards of practice. It is an indicator that you understood the topic requirements. On that note, the standards of practice tend to influence process across various specialties by outlining the profession expectations from members and to provide nurses with a structure for developing competencies. Moreover, the standards helps in creation of better understanding and respect for different nursing roles and also help in promoting and directing nursing practice. In addition, the standards influence nursing process by ensuring consistency in the entire nursing profession, which is crucial in ensuring that patients get quality care. Eventually, standards of care provide nurses with appropriate information on the quality of care they need to provide to patients and also creates measures to assess the care provided (Moran, Burson & Conrad (Eds.), 2016).

Judith, I like how you pointed out the practice of Nurse Practitioners. It is so dramatically different from state to state regarding scope and practice standards. I’m proud to say Washington has very few restrictions. New Mexico gives incentives to NPs who work in underserved areas and have very few restrictions (Duquesne University, 2020). This week we are supposed to be diving into the Future of Nursing study and how its findings project a better comprehensive healthcare system if nurses were more involved.

Along with that, Billie created a discussion about the thought of nursing practice being more a federal oversight than a state one. It makes me wonder if we gave this unrestricted practice to NPs in all states with incentives to work in less privileged or rural areas would we be able to reach goals of meeting equitable healthcare access for all. I want to find out if states that do not use their nurses to the fullest of their education and scope lack overall healthcare delivery, wait times, treatment, preventative health, and community well-being. So if we adopted federal requirements to allow nurses to practice to their fullest, would we have a better healthcare system and a healthier population due to the access?
