Over the years I have had to advocate for my patients so many times. Sometimes it was with the doctor or other health care team members and sometimes it was with the family. 

I remember one time I was admitting a new mom and her new baby to the postpartum floor. As she was being rolled into her room her extended family was gathered in the hallway anxious to see her and the new family member.

I asked the family to wait outside as I was getting her settled and assessed. The patient was visibly upset. When I asked her what was wrong, she expressed that she was shocked her sister was there with her nephew. Her nephew was about 4 or 5 years old and was sick and had a fever. She told me that she had told her sister not to come and bring him around the new baby – but there they were – her sister and the sick nephew.

I told her I would tell her he couldn’t come in and needed to go home. She was worried that her sister would be upset and mad. I assured her it was not a problem for me to tell her. I told her I don’t have to eat Christmas dinner with her so I can tell her that she needs to take the little boy home that he can’t come in the room with the new baby. She might be unhappy with me and that is ok. I could take the pressure off the patient and be the “mean nurse”. I was fine with that. 

The sister wasn’t happy and argued with me. But bottom line I stood my ground with her. She admitted the little guy was sick. He was coughing and had a runny nose and you could see he was sick. She left in a huff. The rest of the family was a bit shocked that I stood up to her I think. The patient was super appreciative. She thanked me over and over.
