There is quite a range of topics on improving patient safety that I have thought about writing. However, I have decided on addressing handwashing among patients admitted in care facilities. The reasons why I chose this heading is due to the frequent adverse events related to healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) among hospitalized patients. I have also realized that there are several infection prevention and control (IPC) strategies in hospitals but most of such practices give preference to healthcare providers as opposed to patients who are the recipient of medical intervention (Pittet et al., 2017). Attention has been on the effectiveness of handwashing practices that guarantee safety to patients. Even though hand hygiene has been widely promoted across the world, specific concerns still remain on the best practices that ensure optimal protection to patients. The challenges of proper hand washing in healthcare system among patients are unexpected but continue to suffice. In my visit to one of the public hospitals in Los Angeles, I realized that effective handwashing techniques are not followed by the patients to the latter. This is due to the unreliable supply of liquid soap and alcohol handrubs to achieve the three stages of handwashing. Besides, even when these agents are available, some patients lacked knowledge on proper techniques of handwashing as some start with alcohol handrub and ends by using the soap. This calls for an initiative by care facilities to inform patients about the handwashing protocols. The education on handwashing can be addressed during bedside services or patients sensitized during health education forums organized by the care facility.

The need to enhance patient and quality of care offered implores healthcare organizations and nurse leaders to implement quality improvement initiatives. The fundamental principle of servant leadership are listening which means servant leader should be a good listener so that they can understand the problems of other team members; empathy is when a team leader should have the potential to keep himself or herself in the place of another person to understand their problems; healing is not just physical healing but assessing the team member’s requirements to maintain an emotional balance in the workplace is a mandatory principle for a servant leader; awareness where servant leaders used to be aware of all the problems which is going on around them; persuasion is when servant leaders rely heavily on persuasion and cooperation rather than authority and delegation. Servant leaders have the ability to convince others as opposed to coercing them into compliance;  foresight is when servant leaders use their intuitive mind to understand the lesson from the past and the reality of the present and how they can improve in the future; stewardship use by servant leaders hold their position of the institute in the trust of the benefit of the society; commitment to the growth of people where servant leaders should play a significant role in establishing their institution in trust for the greater good of society; building community need servant leaders have believed that if you want to work effectively then you should have a good community; and conceptualization when servant leaders work effectively on a perfect plan before the starting of work they used to have the concept in their hand (Correlli, 2021).

I think Listening and commitment are important qualities of the leader which will help in interprofessional communication in providing patient care.  As listening will help us to think fast and react and also helps us to note the important information about the patient which will help in treating them.  Commitment is the major quality that will enable us to provide quality care and support to our peers as well as patient care.
