Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Nurse’s Roles

Nurses have played a fundamental role as frontline workers in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic along with other healthcare professionals. The pandemic has inevitably affected nursing care and overall nurse roles and responsibilities. The change is attributed to additional efforts to meet COVID-19 preparedness and response plans. There were reassignments of nurses to COVID-19-related departments, prompt adoption of targeted new skills and competencies, and strained personalized care, especially for isolated patients (Clari et al., 2021). Nurses were also engaged in COVID-19-related interventions such as triaging and screening of suspected cases, patient education and public awareness, and implementation of infection prevention and control measures such as hand sanitation (Dawaz et al., 2020).

Various challenges to the nurses were presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. The workload was increased which was made worse by the pre-existing staff shortage. There was fear of contracting the disease due to the frequent high risk from the care of infected patients, inadequate supply of personal protective equipment, physical exhaustion, and psychological distress from witnessed deaths (Jerome‐D’Emilia et., 2022). The pandemic-imposed limitations led to changes in obligations to patients. The containment measures led to reduced communication, and patient education and disrupted continuity of care due to the prioritization of pandemic-related interventions (Clari et al., 2021). The high workload also prevented patients from receiving high-quality care which resulted in reduced patient satisfaction with healthcare services and reduced patient-nurse relationships.

The nurses are obligated to protect themselves and their families from practice-related hazards. Occupational safety in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic is thus a pertinent concern due to the risk of contracting the highly contagious virus (Fawaz et al., 2020). This may sometimes present conflicting choices when trying to meet the patient’s needs in absence of adequate resources such as personal protective equipment. To meet their obligations together with those of their families and patients, nurses can adopt certain strategies. These include involvement in religious-spiritual activities, fostering workplace empathy, gaining family support, and strengthening self-worth and responsibility (Irandoost et al., 2022). Nurses should also adhere to clinical practice guidelines and recommended preventive measures.

Describe how the nursing role has changed as the community confronts the COVID-19 pandemic.
Explain new professional challenges that nurses are currently facing in the workplace.
Discuss how nurses’ obligations to patients have changed due to pandemic-imposed limitations.
Identify new obligations nurses have to themselves and their families related to the pandemic.
Give examples of strategies that nurses can implement to meet their new obligations to patients, families, and self.
