Advanced nursing practice has continued to leverage the usage of nursing theories as a tool. Two of the most fundamental nursing theories that have received widespread application in advanced nursing practice include Orem’s Self-Care Theory and Jean Watson’s Theory of human caring. These two theories vary based on their intent, scope and goals. Orem’s Self-Care theory is organized and also properly structured in three categories including the process of nursing, the self-care deficit, and self-care (In Alligood, 2014). Watson’s theory of human caring on the other hand is complex as numerous of the notions involved herein propose theoretical examinations concerning the definitions of spirituality, healing, growing, morality, caring as well as what is regarded human (Sitzman & Watson, 2014). The theory espoused by Watson offers a framework which embraces humanities, science, spirituality, and art that are contingent upon abstract and biased perceptions. The objective of Watson’s theory entails utilization of abstract and biased undertaking to in the usage of transpersonal caring as he states that the rapport between a patient and a nurse depends on the nurse inspiring hope and faith to the patient. However, Orem’s theory’s objective rests on the usage of evidence-based practice to undertake various nursing practices. Therefore, the two theories differ based on their scope, objective, and intent.

Based on the above differences, I believe that Orem’s Self-Care Theory may be more relevant in my future practice as a nurse educator. The reason for this is that it encompasses objectivity in its operation. The theory has been shown to outline structural foundation concerning many evidence-based practices including the process of nursing (In Alligood, 2014). This occurs through evaluation of the process via researching objective statics in health care environment and patient results. Orem’s theory thus supports the assertion made by DeNisco and Baker (2016) that theory should be used to guide nursing practice. Therefore, Orem’s Self-Care Theory appears more suited to my future practice.

According to Braveman et al. (2019), health equity means that everyone has a fair and just opportunity to be as healthy as possible. This requires removing obstacles to health, such as poverty, discrimination, powerlessness, and their consequences, including lack of access to good jobs with fair pay, safe environments, and quality education, housing, and health care.

Health equity must be a priority for health care providers and systems because inequities in health and health care are pervasive, lead to poorer health outcomes and premature deaths, and drain health care resources. The unequal distribution of health care resources can exacerbate inequities not only in health but also in social conditions, as being sick and lacking access to affordable care makes people lose jobs, housing, education, and access to food. (Braveman et al., 2019)

As an advanced registered nurse, I plan to continue working in Nephrology and serve the dialysis population. This patient population is as diverse as can be. Having more awareness of the populations that are more vulnerable to social inequities in healthcare like class, race, ethnicity, immigration status, gender, and sexual orientation would motivate me in pursuing systematic processes and efforts in eliminating some of these disparities. According to DeNisco (2021), a healthcare manager may look at how resources can be realigned to effectively respond to changes in the healthcare system. Managers need to evaluate whether certain functions in their departments must be eliminated, modified, or added and whether these changes will involve further training. They also need to plan processes to maintain the integrity of their institution’s mission, the goodwill of all the patients they serve, and the quality of care.

According to DeNisco (2021), as the world is becoming more diverse, globalization brings diversity and affects societies as cultures, values, and traditions transcend into new territory. The US population is becoming increasingly more ethnically and socioculturally varied. As advanced practiced nurses, we will be challenged to respond to these diverse patient populations and work on reducing healthcare disparities. To effect positive health promotion activities and influence positive healthcare outcomes, providers must understand and appreciate culturally competent care. To put it simply. we should treat our patients the way they want to be treated instead of the way we want to be treated.
