I really enjoyed reading your post. I could not agree with you more in that nursing is definitely a calling, and I strongly believe it was mine. I loved how you related this to the story of Moses, and how he was called upon by God to undertake this impossible yet worthy task. As nurses, we are challenged daily, and we are asked to accomplish the impossible every day-emotionally, physically, and mentally. Yet through all of the trials and resistance we are faced with, we can overcome with God as our strength and shield. As a nurse of 12 years now, it still continues to be such an honor and privilege to get to be God’s servant and provide amazing care, while getting to make a difference in someone’s life. My path to nursing may not have been as direct or easy as I would have liked it to be, however all the experiences, challenges and growth I went through, has made me the nurse I am today. During the time I was not as thankful for my situations, but now looking back, I can be so thankful to God and remember that he has the ultimate plan, and everything happens for a reason and to trust his plan. Most journey’s come with trials and tribulations. I feel that my nursing education and nursing career has had high and low points. Nursing school was rough! I started out nursing school at 18 with barely any life or work experience. It was a major adjustment from normal life to nursing school life. I spent hours studying, in class, in clinical, and then stressing about the after. Once I graduated, the next trial was NCLEX. Thankfully I passed first go around, but I had friends from school who did not and saw how difficult and disheartening it was to fail the first go around. Honestly, the friends I had that had difficulties passing school and had to retake classes are some of the best nurses I’ve known! I saw that sometimes going through something a second time around helped the information to really stick and just made them a better nurse. I have continued to have trials once getting into the nursing work force from anxiety to unhappiness with management. I feel that nursing will continue to have trials and tribulations. It is important to make sure to do something because you really find passion in it, otherwise the journey you take and the work you do will be affected. I feel that those who followed Moses really believed that Moses was following God’s word – because of this, those who travelled with him and Moses himself were able to face the trials and tribulations they encountered without giving up. Therefore, it is important to really believe in your calling as a nurse and not just do it to make someone else happy or for money. (word count: 274)

My worldview is that human beings need to be treated equally no matter their race, color, beliefs, and values. Th golden rule “do unto others as you would have them do unto you” has been my guide in my nursing career. I have had the opportunity to nurse people from different ethnic backgrounds, cultural and spiritual beliefs and I aim to treat everyone with care and compassion.
In Africa precisely Ghana, when someone is critically ill, it is assumed that it is more of a spiritual attack even though there are medical backings to the condition. They rely on prayers whilst seeking medical attention. some people will prefer to do traditional herbs rather than going to the hospital. They will only seek medical attention when they experience complications. Understanding the culture of the people enables us to educate them well on the importance of seeking medical attention first making sure we do not condemn their culture.
Moving to the United States I realized that the perception of the people here with regards to their health is totally different. The people here do not relate their medical conditions to any spiritual backing. And they promptly seek medial attention to avoid their condition from worsening.
With this experience from Africa and America I do my best not to let my spiritual beliefs get in the way of my nursing care towards my patient. I try to know what their cultural and spiritual beliefs are then I educate them, so they make an informed decision towards the management of their health.
During an admission process, we do ask the patient if there is a specific spiritual and cultural belief we need to know with regards to their health and if they have any spiritual preference. This helps us to properly advocate for our patients. This helps the patient gain confidence in us, and it tends to impact their care positively
