The vocation of nursing is an art which revolves around the acts of empathy, healing, advocating, and putting others first. The energy that nurses thrive off comes from within themselves, almost naturally. Servant leadership correlates extremely close with the principles and values of nurses. There are ten characteristics that describe emerging servant leaders: listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, and commitment to other’s growth (Spears, 2004).

Nurses have the ability to demonstrate servant leadership in their everyday practice, and actually are most likely already doing so without even noticing. The concept of servant leadership was first introduced in 1970 by Robert Greenleaf, an American mathematician writer, and consultant. In the 20th Century, Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Theresa, and Martin Luther King Jr. served as examples of servant leadership. I believe that servant leadership is the essence of effective leadership in our digital age. “Servant leadership is defined as a person aspiring to serve first, then evolving by choice to lead by the consent of their followers” (Andrus & Shanahan, 2016). Servant leadership is about focusing on other people’s needs, not their feelings. Research shows that leading with a serving, caring framework can contribute to the effectiveness of creating a healing environment, promoting a compassionate teaching-learning approach and guiding nurses and others in the caregiving field.
