Problem Statement

Heart Failure (HF) or Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), used interchangeably, is a chronic disease worse with aging. About 6.2 million adults in the United States have heart failure costing the nation an estimated $30.7 billion in 2012 (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020). Within the correctional setting, more inmates are being diagnosed with HF/CHF, hence the need to mitigate the prevalence of heart failure by developing a process to identify at-risk individuals and incorporate early preventive intervention.

Study Variable and Hypotheses

A potential cause and effect variable to be considered in this type of research study will be the patient attitude to self-management, preventive health, and health awareness. Another essential variable is the environment, in this case, the correctional setting. The hypothesis can be that early identification of the at-risk individual, preventive measure, and self-management is associated with delay in the severity of heart failure.

Ethical Considerations

In this research, ethical consideration will be in individual health value. It is essential to understand that as much as nurses have ethical values, so are the patient, and this value changes with experience, exposure, maturity, and environment (Guido, 2006). Another ethical consideration is surrounding incarceration status. The subject will need informed consent to participate in the research and that this is to improve the care received during incarceration and not a pharmaceutical experimental horror repeating itself (Wang et al., 2017).

Potential Practice change

Heart failure is a chronic, complex disease without a cure; improving cardiovascular health requires individual behavioral modification and healthcare practice change (Wang et al., 2017). Practice changes such as early risk assessment, preventive education; consistent, ongoing assessment and monitoring; and HF-specific education conducted by a team of practitioners vast in HF management will effectively manage at-risk and heart failure patients. Effective management will, in turn, lead to reduced morbidity and delayed mortality (Fichadiya, Then, & Rankin, 2021).

Starting the Research Process assignment

Formulating a specific, applicable research problem statement is an important step in beginning a research process. The problem statement defines the focus of the research study, dictates what methods and tools will be used, and sets the stage for all subsequent elements of the research process. Because of this, it is necessary to put a great deal of thought into the problem statement to ensure that the rest of the research process will be well planned and appropriate to the problem at hand.

This week’s Discussion asks you to identify evidence-based practice problems that can be addressed using quantitative research methods. Based on the practice problem you select, formulate a quantitative research problem statement. In this Discussion, you are also given the opportunity to evaluate your colleagues’ problem statements. Please refer to this week’s Learning Resources for appropriate and scholarly examples of research problem statements and how they inform the rest of the research process.

To prepare:

Determine a nursing practice problem that is of interest to you and that is appropriate for a quantitative research study. Note: You will continue to use this problem in the Discussions over the next several weeks.
Using the Walden Library and other credible sources, locate and read two or three articles that address your practice problem. (you must cite the articles read in this assignment)
With your practice problem in mind, review the Learning Resources and media presentations focusing on the strategies presented for generating a research problem statement.
Ask yourself: What is the importance of my practice problem to nursing, research, and theory? How might addressing this problem bring about positive social change? How will investigating this problem support evidence-based practice?
