Week 3 Assignment: Problem/PICOT/Evidence Search (PPE) Worksheet (graded)

  • Locate the literature review section. Summarize using your own words from one of the study/literature findings. Be sure to identify which study you are summarizing.

I chose Continuing Competence in the “Review of the Literature” section. To summarize, Leonardi et al, reported a literature review of 50 articles published since 2012. The reported findings were split into four distinct categories.

  1. Identification of specific competencies.
  2. Validation of competencies
  3. International competency assessment
  4. Competencies and disciplines outside of nursing
  • Discuss how the author’s review of the literature (studies) supported the research purpose/problem. Share something that was interesting to you as you read the literature review section.

The category of validating competencies supported the study. The category demonstrated how validation and revalidation of proficiencies associated with specific certifications could be done in a cost-effective efficient manner. One of the most common methods to achieve continuing confidence was facilitated by formal and informal educational classes. There was some evidence to support the effectiveness of the sessions with outcomes suggestive of an increase in one’s knowledge base and perceived competence. Other findings demonstrated that professionals may attend courses that are easily accessible and are affordable. However, these programs were not the greatest quality or specific to their learning needs.  It was also suggested that participation in these courses did not ensure changes in practice. The authors also mentioned that participants may not “be able to understand, retain, or use the information that was provided.”

Written exams, a log of practice hours in your specialty, scholarship through publication and professional presentation, individual portfolios, and performance evaluation of a 360° assessment were all part of various continuing competence methods. There was little evidence that suggested simulation was an effective tool used to evaluate continuing competence in credentialing and certification, even though this was accepted as a patient and virtual teaching tool. I would have thought simulation would be an effective tool, especially since this works well in patient care.

  • Describe one strategy that you learned that would help you create a strong literature review/search for evidence. Share your thoughts on the importance of a thorough review of the literature.

A strategy that would help me create a strong literature review/search would include the identification of inclusion and exclusion criteria. The understanding of which studies should be included and excluded is extremely important. There are some frequent questions that are necessary when identifying appropriate criteria related to the study design. The publication year, the population of interest, intervention, and outcomes of significance are all important questions that need consideration. If the researcher is interested in just the effectiveness of an intervention, then citations can be retained only if the studies include experimental or quasi-experimental designs. The author also suggests that qualitative studies would be more pertinent if the required evidence relates to patient preferences. It is important to remain focused on criteria related to the topic. By including relevant studies, and excluding indirectly related literature, a more focused approach can be achieved.

Purpose

Collaborative identification and interpretation of practice problems is a requirement of professional practice (AACN, 2008).  Locating and summarizing findings using credible online databases is necessary for evidence-based nursing (AACN, 2008; QSEN, 2020).  This assignment provides a learning activity for students to experience a practice-based scenario and apply a process worksheet designed to assist in the identification of an independent nursing problem or concern, develop a PICOT clinical question, and search for evidence using credible online databases/sources.

Course Outcomes

This assignment enables the student to meet the following Course Outcomes.

CO 1: Examine the sources of evidence that contribute to professional nursing practice. (PO 7)

CO 2: Apply research principles to the interpretation of the content of published research studies. (POs 4 & 8)

CO 4: Evaluate published nursing research for credibility and significance related to evidence-based practice. (POs 4 & 8)

CO 5: Recognize the role of research findings in evidence-based practice. (POs 7 & 8)

Due Date

Submit the completed PPE Worksheet by Sunday, 11:59 p.m. MT at the end of Week 3.

Assignment Overview Transcript

Assignment Practice Scenario

Your Chief Nurse Executive (CNE) recognizes you are pursuing your BSN and has asked you to be a member of the nursing evidence-based practice (NEBP) committee. She has advised the members that the purpose is to conduct nursing research studies involving clinical practice problems. Increasing nurses’ awareness of quality and safety concerns will help develop an attitude of inquiry and asking questions (Sherwood & Barnsteiner, 2017). Baccalaureate nurses “collaborate in problem identification, participate in the process of search, retrieval, and documentation of evidence, and integrate evidence using credible databases and internet resources” (AACN, 2008, pp. 16-17).

The CNE has advised all members of the following areas of quality and safety clinical practice that each committee member needs to consider and choose only one as a priority area for conducting a research study. Sources of research problems come from nursing clinical practice (Houser, 2018):

Quality Safety
Patient satisfactionPatient education Falls
Non-pharmacological pain management Errors. Examples include:MedicationPatient identificationCommunication
ReadmissionsLength of stayCosts Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs).
Examples include:Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infections (CLABSI)Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI)Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP)Surgical Site Infections (SSI)Sepsis (Screening or Prevention)
Discharge Teaching/CoachingTransitions of Care/Level of Care Pressure UlcersSkin Integrity

Your CNE has requested that you select ONLY one topic area and complete the PPE Worksheet using only one topic area. The committee will collaborate and decide as a team which nursing clinical problem area will be the priority focus of their next research study. Thank you for your valuable contributions to this important NEBP committee.
