Florence Nightingale developed the Polar Area Diagram that led to modern hospital sanitation practices. The Polar Area Diagram was statistic report on the cause of death for soldiers during the Crimean War. The color shading indicated the cause of death in each area of the diagram for instance red represents deaths from wounds received in battle, blue represents deaths from infectious diseases and black represents deaths from other causes. Nightingale constructed the areas of the segments proportional to the annual rate of mortality per 1,000 soldiers in each month. The information that stands out is the overwhelming proportion of deaths resulting from infectious diseases. Overall, 1.65M soldiers who fought in this war, 900K or 55% died. Many of those deaths were from diseases brought about by the terrible living conditions which they suffered (NurseJournal). She used the diagram to identify determinants of social health.

Clara Barton left a teaching career to deliver medical supplies during the civil war and founded the American Red Cross. This is an example of bringing the medical care to an isolated or poor population.

Mary Beckinridge founded the New Model of Rural Health Care & Frontier Nursing Service that delivered healthcare to underserved rural women and children as a role of Nurse Midwife.

Dorothea Dix advocated for policies for the rights of mental health patients and founded the first mental hospital.

Margaret Sanger advocated for women’s health and opened the first birth control clinic because her mother died of complications from a pregnancy.

Mary Mahoney founded the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses (NACGN) to promote nursing as a profession among the African American race in the United States and Canada.

Mary Seacole learned about medicine while traveling and taught her knowledge to soldiers during the Crimean War.

Virginia Avenel Henderson influenced professional caregiver education, practice and research. Nurse educators use Henderson’s work for training purposes.

These nurses have utilized the evidence-based practice, put an emphasis on safety and quality and made a way for advanced nursing practice for today.

Teresa,

Thank you for sharing, the Polar Area Diagram is quite interesting. I have uploaded a recreation of Nightingale’s diagram.

“Example of a polar-area diagram invented by Florence Nightingale. The original was in color with the outer area in blue, the central darker areas in black, and the central lighter areas in red. The text in the lower left corner reads:

The Areas of the blue, red, & black wedges are each measured from the centre as the common vertex.

The blue wedges measured from the centre of the circle represent area for area the deaths from Preventable or Mitigable Zymotic diseases, the red wedges measured from the centre the deaths from wounds, & the black wedges measured from the centre the deaths from all other causes.

The black line across the red triangle in Nov. 1854 marks the boundary of the deaths from all other causes during the month.

In October 1854, & April 1855, the black area coincides with the red, in January & February 1856, the blue coincides with the black the entire areas may be compared by following the blue, the red, & the black lines enclosing them.”
