The students in these programs excelled clinically, as they practiced and learned at the bedside, while helping to staff the hospitals as well. Later, associate degree programs were developed by Mildred Montage in the 1950s. This was to give a better theoretical and knowledge base for nurses, as well as offer college credits at an affordable cost. This was beneficial as the need for nurses continued to grow. EBP studies have shown for example that Hospital Acquired Infections (HAI) such as Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI) can be reduced or eliminated by avoiding unnecessary insertions of indwelling Foley catheters. As professional nurses, our practice should be to uphold and ensure that we do not unnecessarily insert Foleys if we are to promote positive patient outcomes and reduce cost on the organizations that we work for.
How do you incorporate self-care that includes mental health and spiritual well-being? To be effective care providers, we should take care of ourselves physically and mentally. When we feel burned out and tired, we should take time off and spend quality time with our loved ones, recalibrate ourselves. We should try to incorporate healthy diet in our routine, and engage in stress reduction activities such as exercise, meditation, and spend time to ourselves. For patients, as nurses our professional nursing code of ethics require that we should always put our patients health as priority and ensure that they receive the best and quality care safely.
