There are definitely some similarities and paths that are interchangeable leading and managing, but for the most part, there are many differences, and pros and cons. An effective manager will possess leadership skills, and an efficient leader also needs good managing abilities in order to be successful. “Management controls or directs people and resources according to principles or values that have been established by the organization where they work. Leaders set a new direction or vision for the people who follow them. They coach, guide, develop, and inspire the people around them, communicating their vision of what can be achieved and helping evolve strategies to realize that vision. They motivate people and negotiate for resources and other support to achieve their goals (Pepperdine.edu, 2021).” Based on my experiences in the health care industry, an advanced registered nurse can lead well and provide management. Someone I think about who embodied great leadership and management skills was a former Nurse Practitioner I used to work with. There were so many characteristics about her that made me want to emulate them in my own nursing practice and as a leader. She was calm, strong, unwavering in her decisions yet collaborative, communicative and never jumped to conclusions. Obviously, all these characteristics are ideal, but the one thing I admired most about her was her willingness to take time to educate. Because of her willing to take time to teach, I learned so much from her clinically, emotionally and personally. Whether a formal or informal leader, or whether they know it or not, they change and influence the next generation of nurses moving forward. I have had many different roles in my hospital from ED/Trauma RN to charge nurse to house supervisor to ED manager and now ED/Trauma educator. Along this path I have learned so much as to how to be a leader and manager. One of my biggest lessons in both of these areas, was to always seek the whole story before forming an opinion or a response, this is one strategy I learned to become a more effective leader and manager.

Dr. Aaron, everyone has their sense of standards and morals that contribute to the worldwide view, whether in healthcare or the day-to-day actions of life in general. Working within the healthcare system as an advanced practice nurse in a leadership position, if there is a conflict with a patient, I would have to set my personal view aside as I am here to serve the patient. When we often teach patients about lifestyle changes and encourage aftercare plans, they are rejected due to their personal beliefs. Over the past three years working on the Covid unit, there have been many instances when I have come to terms with the fact that my beliefs do not outweigh that of the person I am caring for. An example of this was a patient that would have undoubtedly recovered from his Covid episode but chose not to receive medication or advanced oxygen therapy. The medical staff honored his wish and right to place himself in hospice after losing his mother and brother to the same disease. I remember feeling bewildered and angry because of his lack of will to fight for himself because my worldwide view was to beat Covid at any cost.

As for colleagues, this conflict must be handled professionally. When vaccines became mandatory, the organization I am employed was testing all unvaccinated employees weekly. Due to this process, the hospital was contemplating the idea of charging employees for this service. Again, my personal view, as well as my work integrity, conflicted. I stand for everyone having the right to choose their path with vaccinations; I was against the mandate and viewed this action as a further insult to those who stood their ground for religious and medical reasons. It wasn’t easy to explain and advocate for these members professionally.

Any interaction or relationship is always a form of acceptance, openness, and collaboration.

In the healthcare sector, managing and leading are two separate but related facets of good leadership, especially for advanced registered nurses (ARNs). Although all positions include leading and persuading others to accomplish shared objectives, their methods and duties differ. Setting the direction, encouraging, and inspiring a healthcare team or organization are all part of leadership (Wood, 2021). When they exhibit a distinct sense of direction, values, and purpose, ARNs depict good leadership. They ought to set an example for their colleagues by being professionally dressed and demonstrating a dedication to patient-centered care. In a field that is changing quickly, leading in healthcare requires encouraging innovation, supporting continual improvement, and being flexible (Almost et al., 2020). In order to improve patient outcomes, this may entail promoting evidence-based practice, supporting cutting-edge technologies, or fostering interdisciplinary cooperation. Strong communication skills are also necessary for effective leadership in the healthcare industry, as ARNs should interact with patients, their families, and team members to foster a compassionate and encouraging environment.

In contrast, management in the healthcare industry entails organizing, planning, and coordinating resources to effectively accomplish particular goals and tasks. By managing daily tasks, including patient scheduling, resource allocation, and regulatory compliance, ARNs can offer effective management. Budgeting, allocating resources, and keeping the right number of employees on staff are additional components of effective management (Wood, 2021). ARNs must strike a balance between their administrative duties and the demands of delivering superior patient care. Problem-solving and decision-making are other crucial components of management, requiring ARNs to examine data and information in order to make decisions that are advantageous to the healthcare organization as well as the patients (Disch, 2020). Using a shared governance model is one tactic I have used in my expertise in the healthcare sector to effectively lead and manage personnel within healthcare organizations. In the hospital context, we set up frequent interdisciplinary committees where doctors, ARNs, and other healthcare professionals could evaluate outcomes data, debate concerns related to patient care, and suggest ways to improve the system. This made it possible for us to recognize and resolve issues with patient care, improve communication, and expedite procedures. Incorporating employees into choices about procedures, regulations, and quality improvement projects fostered team member involvement and a sense of responsibility.
