“Collaborative interactions demonstrate a blending of professional cultures and are achieved through the sharing of skills and knowledge in order to improve the quality of patient care” (Bridges et al., 2011). I typically work with stroke patients, and we frequently collaborate with physical, occupational, and speech therapy.

The Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) defines competencies related to roles and responsibilities, stating that we must recognize our limitations in skills, knowledge, and abilities (2016). We have a high level of confidence in these professionals to safely discharge these patients. Because many members of the nursing staff are aware that physical therapists specialize in patient movement, we take their recommendations very seriously.

Patients who have had a stroke may experience new deficits and require education on how to adjust to their new normal. We also collaborate closely with speech therapy, who assists us in safely feeding our patients. To ensure that everyone is on the same page, we use communication tools, as described in IPEC competency CC1 (2016).

We have forms that specify how the patient should sit, how they should take their medications, and how their food or liquids should be changed in size or consistency. If you establish trusting relationships with other healthcare professionals now, as described in IPEC competency VE6, the entire team will benefit when you advance to your future role as an advanced registered nurse because the foundation is already in place (2016).

It is critical to be aware of the skills and competencies of other healthcare professionals and to recognize that everyone has something to offer in terms of patient care. As an advanced practice nurse, it is critical to understand your scope of practice as well as the scope of practice of those with whom you work.

I agree with you that the interprofessional collaboration is essential in sharing information and ensuring that there is high quality of services offered to the patient. In a healthcare organization, the patient goes through various sections of the healthcare facility and the collaboration of the professionals at every stage helps in ensuring there is efficiency and coordinated care (Busari et al., 2017).

This reduces the errors of commission and omission during the clinical procedures. The first place is the registry or the healthcare records desk where the initial information about the patient is collected.

Then the patient will be referred to the physician or clinical officer who will intern work with the nurses to ensure the patient is treated and taken care of. In order to promote quality care and patient satisfaction the interprofessional collaboration is essential.

Topic 1 DQ 2: Interprofessional Relationships 

Health care organizations consist of staff with different experiences and specializing in various practice areas. When a patient visits a health care facility, it is crucial for health care providers to collaborate and ensure that the patient gets the deserved attention and care.

Accordingly, strong interprofessional relationships should be developed and sustained. Irajpour et al. (2019) suggested that modern health care should be a team sport. To achieve the desired health outcomes, various providers should combine their experience and work as a team. Strong interprofessional relationships increase collaboration since each team member is recognized in the patient care process.

Specialties come together and combine their experiences to ensure that the patient receives optimal care. Competencies should be highly valued. The Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) defined interprofessional collaboration along four core competencies. The first competency is values/ethics for interprofessional practice.

As Brashers et al. (2019) explained, other competencies include roles/responsibilities, interprofessional communication, and teams and teamwork. Each competency’s central element is improving relationships and maintaining a climate of mutual respect. 

Concerning the benefit of interprofessional relationships on patient outcomes, it is justified to deduce that relationships are the foundations of quality health and timely delivery of services. Since interprofessional relationships encourage consultation/communication, the chances of medication errors reduce (Irajpour et al., 2019).

Besides that, such relationships promote team-based care, which is the foundation of patient-centered care. Primary doctors, specialized physicians, and nurses, among other relevant team members, are highly involved in the diagnosis and treatment equation to ensure that the patient receives the best care possible according to individual needs. Outcomes are also improved through data sharing, as the team considers different possibilities and examines an issue from different viewpoints. 

On forming an interprofessional team and collaborate with other advanced registered nurse roles, duties’ delegation is a suitable way of enhancing collaboration. Besides that, social interaction should be encouraged through small events. Communication through technology platforms is another way of keeping health care teams together.

In 2009 six national education associations of schools of health professions representing higher education in allopathic and osteopathic medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, and public health formed a collaborative to promote and encourage interprofessional learning experiences. The Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) established common core competencies for interprofessional collaborative practice which can help guide curricula development across the health professions.

Discussion Questions (DQ)

Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, include a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words.

Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source.

One or two sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words.

I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses.

Weekly Participation

Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately.

In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies.

Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work).

Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.

APA Format and Writing Quality

Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required).

Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation.

I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.

Use of Direct Quotes

I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly.

As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an underastanding of the content or critical analysis of the content.

It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.

For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts.

If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course.

Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses.

There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.
